Initially there was 4½  years diploma course which continued up to 1973. The enrolment of students was 25 per year and the Govt. of Assam, constituted a Board i.e. Board of Ayurvedic Medicine, to frame rule-regulation, syllabus, curriculum and also to conduct the examinations. Thereafter with the support of student strength, teachers and employees along with public pressure the college authority introduced degree course and in the(month of November,1974, the two year pre-Ayurvedic course started before the main 5½year BAMS degree course under Gauhati University, Assam. After two years of introduction of  pre-Ayurvedic course, the pre-Ayurvedic passed candidates and the P.U. Sc. (presently HSSLC Science) passed candidates were eligible for admission into the BAMS course which was introduced in the year 1977. In the year 1983, the pre-Ayurvedic course was abolished and HSSLC Science students were admitted directly on the basis of merit having minimum 50% marks in P,C,B&E(Physics, Chemistry, Biology & English). Now the candidates have to appear in a Common Entrance Examination test (CEE,Assam) and according on the basis of merit the students get admission in the B.A.M.S. course. In the time of starting of degree  course, there were only twenty enrolment of students and it was increased to 25 and 30 in different year successively and in the year 1995, the intake capacity again increased up to 50, where 6(six) seats were allotted for NE states (1 seat for each state). Recently 1 more seat has been allotted for students from foreign countries.  At present four Professional final examinations are being held annually maintaining a duration of 4 years of main course under Srimanta Sankardeva University of Health Sciences, Assam as per C.C.I.M. prescribed syllabus and curriculum, then one year compulsory rotatory internship  is necessary to complete the 5 year degree BAMS course.
